  1. On the road to BùthBharraigh

  2. Barra and Vatersay Agricultural and Horticultural Association It all started here!

  3. Barra and Vatersay Agricultural and Horticultural Association • Formed in 2000 • Ran Produce Sales – now known as Island Markets • Did a feasibility study on Food Festival but didn’t get funded • October 2010 Sales were reorganised and sales planned a year in advance • Island Produce Show started running competitions at each event • Developing markets further to make them bigger community events with more demonstrations, activities etc… • This has all be achieved by volunteers

  4. Barra and Vatersay Agricultural and Horticultural Association • But the Island Markets did not go far enough • They proved people wanted local produce • But people wanted it all the time

  5. Barra and Vatersay Agricultural and Horticultural Association • In 2012 we undertook research to find out whether we should look further at a Local Produce Shop and Bakery on the island. • The results showed that people would buy more local produce if it was convenient and all under the one roof. • We held a public meeting and 14 people volunteered for the steering group. • Summer 2012 we opened a small shop and café out of Northbay Hall for 3 days a week, 8 weeks during the summer.

  6. Barra and Vatersay Agricultural and Horticultural Association • The main aims of the local produce shop are:- • To make local produce more accessible to both residents and visitors. • To provide the opportunity for new and/or increased income streams for local crofters, gardeners and crafters. • To boost the local economy by keeping money on the islands and building economic resilience. • To help make the island more sustainable. • The majority of the stock will be sourced locally with 80% of the purchase price going back to the producer. The shop would be run by volunteers with the bakery employing a member of staff.

  7. Barra and Vatersay Agricultural and Horticultural Association Christmas Shop It was decided to open for a week in November and a week in December on the run up to Christmas. We got a space in an industrial unit and ran the shop for the week in November and then ended up running it for 12 days in December 50 Producers were involved including Barratlantic, bakers, crafters, artists, photographers, gardeners and local organisations and churches.

  8. Stocking ButhBharraigh Local and non local items

  9. Barra and Vatersay Agricultural and Horticultural Association Shop is mainly full of local items and we have 50 producers already supplying items. For local items these are given on a sale or return basis with 80% of the price going back to the producer. However there is also a need for other items that cannot be obtained on the island. The shop can make about 1/3 on these items.

  10. Salt Rapeseed Oil Chocolate Centre of the World Cheese

  11. Barra and Vatersay Agricultural and Horticultural Association Christmas Shop Fantastic response from public Brought in over £10,000 with £8,000 going back to producers More people coming forward as suppliers Good feedback from other shops

  12. Barra and Vatersay Agricultural and Horticultural Association • Lessons Learned • Need to standardise prices • Need to work on corporate image and marketing • Quality control needs to be tackled • Gave producers a better idea of level of work this would involve • Get back to work scheme worked well • Need for more volunteer training • Definitely a massive demand!
