  2. What is a vitamin? • Vitamins are organic substances necessary for life Why do I need them? • essential to the normal functioning of our bodies, and except for a few exceptions, cannot be made by our bodies

  3. How do vitamins do it all???? Fat Soluble Vitamins Step 1 - eat food with fat soluble vitamins Step 2 - vitamins are stored in fat in body/liver Step 3 - vitamins wait around until they are needed, up to 6 months!!! Step 4 - when they are needed they are accessed (Vitamins A, D, E, and K are all fat-soluble vitamins)

Continued… Water Soluble Vitamins Step 1 - Eat foods with water soluble vitamins Step 2 - Vitamins travel through bloodstream Step 3 - Whatever your body doesn’t use comes out when you pee  ***These vitamins need to be replaced often cause they don’t stick around!!!*** (vitamin C, B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), niacin, B6 (pyridoxine), folic acid, B12 (cobalamine), biotin, and pantothenic acid)

What do vitamins do? • Have hundreds of different functions Vitamin A • Found in: • milk fortified with vitamin A • liver • orange fruits and vegetables (cantaloupe, carrots, sweet potatoes) • dark green leafy vegetables (like kale, collards, spinach) • enable cell growth & help us see in color instead of black and white

B Vitamins • Found in: • whole grains, such as wheat and oats • fish and seafood • poultry and meats • eggs • dairy products, like milk and yogurt • leafy green vegetables • beans and peas -important in metabolic activity, make energy and set it free -Important for metabolic activity (make energy & set it free!!!)

  7. Vitamin C • Found in: • citrus fruits, like oranges • cantaloupe • strawberries • tomatoes • broccoli • cabbage • kiwi fruit • sweet red peppers -important for keeping body tissues, such as gums and muscles in good shape, healing cuts and resisting infection

  8. Vitamin D • milk fortified with vitamin D • fish • egg yolks • liver • fortified cereal -important for forming and maintaining strong bones and teeth, and aids in the absorption of calcium

  9. Vitamin E • Found in: • whole grains, such as wheat and oats • wheat germ • leafy green vegetables • sardines • egg yolks • nuts and seeds -maintains body's tissues, protects your lungs from becoming damaged by polluted air, and aids in formation of red blood cells

  10. Vitamin K • Found in: • leafy green vegetables • dairy products, like milk and yogurt • broccoli • soybean oil -important for clotting blood and stopping bleeding
