  1. Camp Kaitawa By Libby Dean

  2. Introduction It was a warm sunny morning as the Year 5’s of Reignier School were ready to go to Camp Kaitawa. No one knew that there were going to be long car trips, humungous never ending mountains, beautiful lakes, dark muddy caves and smelly smoke all ahead of us. What an absolutely fun and phenomenal week!

  3. Monday Firstly I chose my bed. It was a bottom bunk. Then I swopped with Molly. I slept on the floor. Later on we all went for a walk to see a massive beautiful Green Lake. Soon we passed the pipelines. We had to walk up and down them. It was exhausting! Everyone had spaghetti bolognaise for dinner. A guy called Richard came in from DOC and talked about all the native plants and animals. Next we went to bed. It was a long day.

  4. Tuesday We had to have a big breakfast to last us through the 7 & a half hour walk (Ngamoko). 20 minutes through the walk we stopped at the 1000 year old rata tree. We had morning-tea there. Soon we carried on our journey. At some parts of the tramp it was a very narrow, threatening your life. In other words scary! But at the top it was an amazing view! We walked back to camp, had our showers, dinner & pudding then went to sleep.

  5. Wednesday I woke up, ate my scrumptious breakfast and got ready to walk to Lake Waikareiti. The Kaka group got dropped off while every other group made a little prayer for lunch. Then we started our walk. When we got to the top we had lunch and walked back down again. Next we walked the loop track. We saw some stunning waterfalls. Also some little weta eggs. When we got back to camp we had some major down time. Almost as soon as we all had a rest Mrs Gibson came in and told us to put our sneakers on and line up outside to do the confidence course. I really enjoyed the skinny rope that you had to walk across. Later on we had showers, dinner, pudding, quizzes and last of all sleep!

  6. Thursday In the morning everyone left to go to the caves. Mrs Baudinet lead the way. She introduced everyone to tomos. I was very frightened because they were 100’s of metres deep. The whole path had roots throughout it so someone could trip up. The pathway was very muddy. At one point we had to climb down a very long ladder to reach a cave that you had to crawl on your hands and knees. The caves took 3 hours so then we went to a park to play rugby. It was men against boys. I played as well. Suddenly, I heard some voices calling my name, the girls wanted me to be the bottom of a human pyramid. When we got back to camp, we got into our cookout groups. My group was meant to make hamburgers but we made nacho’s instead. The dessert was so delicious. It was : bananas, marshmallows and chocolate. The parents prepared it for us. They wrapped it in tinfoil. Then Sophie Lancaster’s Dad put it on the fire for us. The bananas, marshmallows and chocolate all melted together and it was YUMMY!!

  7. Friday Everyone packed up and cleaned everything. Some people had to clean the toilets. I went in the Special Olympics van. I sat next to Briana and sang songs all the way home. We stopped in Wairoa for lunch. It was very sunny and hot there. What an amazing week. I am so proud of myself for achieving it. I really enjoyed my week at Camp Kaitawa!
