  4. Council of Trent (1545-1563) • Refused to compromise on any belief. • Salvation by faith and works. • Established education for priests. • Developed means of dealing with heretics: • Holy Office - Church’s FBI • Index of Forbidden Books

  6. Rise of the Jesuits • Founded by St. Ignatius Loyola • Big on missionary work. • Follow the 4th vow- do whatever the pope requests of you.

  8. Pre-Scientific Revolution • Ptolemaic/Geocentric Theory- earth is the center of the galaxy - other planets revolve around it. • Things get more perfect the closer they get to Heaven THEN CAME…

  9. Scientific Revolution • Heliocentric Theory- sun is the center of the universe (Copernicus). • Imperfect heavenly bodies (Galileo); (bye, bye Aristotle’s crystal spheres) • Dominated by reason, natural laws (Newton’s 3 laws of motion) • Watchmaker (Deist) God

Great Scientists • Copernicus-Heliocentric Theory • Galileo- telescope: planets were actually imperfect spheres (disproves old Aristotle’s views). • Newton- calculus and gravity prove new theory • Kepler- 3 laws of planetary motion: planets move in elliptical, not circular orbits. • Bacon- Scientific Method. BIG THEME: Reason isn’t good enough anymore. You must be able to prove theories!
