  3. Catholic/Counter Reformation • Pope Paul III • During the 1530’s and 1540’s set out to revive the moral authority of the Church and end corruption within the papacy  Appointed reformers

  4. Council of Trent • Created in 1545, lasted about 20 years • Removed simony and indulgences • Re-affirmed papal authority and 7 sacraments • Bible is major source of religious truth, but NOT THE ONLY • Set up schools to educate clergy, stop corruption & challenge Protestant views

  5. The Inquisition • Pope Paul III strengthened the Inquisition with a direct impact on the Protestant threat • Church to get rid of heresies used secret testimony, torture, & execution

  6. Result of Catholic reformation • by late 1500’s Rome was more virtuous/moral than the one Luther visited 70 years earlier • piety, religious art, and charity flourished all over Europe • helped stopped the Protestant tide • in the end, Europe was still divided: Protestant vs. Catholic

  9. Mary – “Bloody Mary” Mother (Catherine of Aragon) devout Catholic. Wanted England to remain Catholic Marries her cousin Phillip II of Spain  political marriage Wanted to align Spain & England as Catholic countries She was fat & ugly – rumored they never consummated the marriage Phillip was only in England a few times

Mary – “Bloody Mary” • Led the Protestant Inquisition • Killed over 300 at the stake for being Protestant leaders • Including Thomas Cranmer  Archbishop of Canterbury • Had a half sister  Elizabeth • Advised to kill Elizabeth for political reasons • Elizabeth was a loved Protestant • Put in Tower of London for treason against the Queen • Elizabeth never confessed • Mary couldn’t kill her – had her “banished” under close watch

  12. Elizabeth Becomes Queen in 1558 Wanted religious settlement 1559: Parliament passed a new Act of Supremacy which repealed the pro-Catholic laws of Mary’s reign Established a monarch as the head of the English Church Showed compromise and ambiguity to unite as many people as possible
