  2. Counter Reformation • The Catholic Church was tired of being painted as the “bad guy” throughout the Reformation • They fought back in the form of the counter reformation, and tried to restore some of the integrity of the Catholic Church

  3. Counter- Reformation • Two major elements played key roles in the counter-reformation: • *Ignatius Loyola and the Jesuits • *Council of Trent

  4. Counter Reformation Movement • *Purpose *1. Revive the moral authority of the Catholic Church *2. Stop the spread of Protestantism

  5. Loyola • Ignatius Loyola • *Religious leader during the counter-reformation • *Founded the Society of Jesus(Jesuits) • Jesuits • *Religious order • *Are evident primarily in education and missionary work

Jesuit Influence in United States • Many colleges and universities in the US are Jesuit institutions • Xavier • Georgetown • Boston College • Loyola University • Gonzaga • Marquette • Fordham • These are just a list of some not all of the universities and colleges in the US that have Jesuit influence

  7. Loyola • Loyola and the Jesuits 1. *Purpose – combat heresy and spread Catholic Faith 2. *Actions – Set up schools, helped Catholic rulers combat heresy, etc…

  8. Council of Trent Background • Called to order by Pope Paul III in 1545 • 700 bishops could have showed up but at its height only about 270 bishops attended. • Majority of bishops in attendance were Italian • Therefore the Pope controlled most of those bishops

Purpose of the Council of Trent • Council of Trent • Convened by Pope Paul III in 1545. • Delegates examined criticisms made by Protestants of the Catholic Church • Addressed the abuses of the church: • Corruption of the church • Training of priests was regulated • Financial abuse was curbed • Sale of indulgences was abolished

  10. Results of the Council of Trent • 1. *More emphasis placed on quality of clergy • 2. *Christians need faith and good works for salvation. They were not saved by faith alone. >>First and Third session accomplished the most

  11. Counter Reformation Cont’d • Successful? – Yes, it stopped the spread of Protestantism and some people came back to the Catholic Church

  12. *Impact of the Reformation • *Growth of Secularism – worldly views (less religious) • Religion began to fall into the background • Is it like this today? • *Growth of Individualism • People were not as reliant on church or state • *Eventual Growth of Religious Tolerance • People began to be more accepting of other religions that were different from their own. • *No longer a unified Catholic Europe (multiple Christian groups exist) • It is still like this today. England is still predominately Anglican
