  2. Today we will be learning to: • solve a given problem • collect, sort and organise information • test a hypothesis • record in a table.

  3. Mental Activity Estimating and checking

  4. Estimate the number of letters. How many letters are in this sentence? How could we check the estimate?

  5. It takes too long to count the letters one at a time.

  6. Count the number of letters in each word. Add them up. How many letters are in this sentence? 3 + 4 + 7 + 3 + 2 + 4 + 8 =

  7. What strategies can we use to add up several numbers?

  8. Main Activity Today we are going to sort things into groups and write them in tables.

  9. We use a lot of long words in mathematics. Do you think that most of them have more than five letters? How can we check this?

  10. Use cards with words from maths on them. Choose a card. Count how many letters your word has.

  11. Who has a word with three letters? Who has a word with four letters? Who has a word with five letters?

  12. Write your words in a table like this.

  17. Make a chart for a class display, which shows the number of letters in each person’s name. Estimate the most common word length in a poem. Sort the information into a table and make up some questions about the data. Group Work
