  1. PREPARATIONS FOR A FORECASTING LABORATORYON SHORT-RANGE FORECASTING OF CONVECTION Feliciano Jiménez-Sánchez Alejandro Roa-Alonso Francisco Martín-León José Miguel Fernández-Serdán ATAP 2nd Convection Workshop, Landshut, 8-10oct2009

  2. FORECASTING LABORATORY – FL - ON SHORT-RANGE FORECASTING OF CONVECTION • FL objectives: Revise/improve existing methodologies, criteria, tools… • Forecasters in National Forecasting Centre (CNP) stay one week (when out of shift, shifts of 6+1), performing a practical exercise: daily prepare/fill one similar-to internal coordination “technical guidelines”, day-to-day follow-on, final reporting. • Themes according to needs / fcstrs.’ request. 2008-2009: Frontal diagnosis, Medium-range&EPS. Convection s.r.f. is 2009-early 2010 theme. • Main tools/support: • Theme-dedicated intranet page, with many links. Permanent (will serve for continuous or new staff training, inclusion of new case studies or practical exercises). • 1-2 ATAP’s tutors. • Daily briefing/discussion of the work prepared, with ATAP people (and fcstrs. sometimes). • Convection FL: • Objective: Improve Technical guidelines (currently 2/day) for severe weather, with focus on convection as first priority. In fact, increase/update fcstrs’ knowledge on convection forecasting. • Targetting D+1 but also D+2 and even D+0 forecasts. • Expected results: to determine limitations in existing tools and methodologies. To check use of probabilistic info. (s.r.f.EPS) and new HIRLAM7.2 (HARMONIE2.5). A procedure and mechanisms to quickly store&process case studies. • And: better fcstrs’ feed-back to develop/optimize techniques, tools… www.aemet.es

  3. F. L. ON SHORT-RANGE FORECASTING OF CONVECTION: THE INTRANET DEDICATED PAGE (Opening the page) Real-time NWP info. Download/print templates (Technical guidance – chart+description, questionnaire; final ATAP report) Archived cases: NWP and verificacion data On-line links to documentation, rules, recommended practices and lexicon, and other data links 2nd Convection Workshop, Landshut, 8-10oct2009 3 www.aemet.es

  4. IMPROVEMENTS IN THE INTRANET WEB PAGE FOR ACCESSING MSG DATA AND PRODUCTS – part I (“new” convection entry, ingredients) José Miguel Fernández-Serdán serdan@inm.es ATAP 2nd Convection Workshop, Landshut, 8-10oct2009

  5. NEW SCHEME IN THE MSG PAGE FOR ACCESSING EACH “ASPECT” OF THE CONVECTION First MSG page: lists of channels and products. Now, also phenomena-oriented entries: convection, fog/low stratus, aviation, synoptic diagnostic, dust), but still, rather on the basis of “lists of products”. New, more meteorological approach is developed&checked: 3 sub-entries for a-priori conditions, initiation, and characterization, in the Convection entry. Advantages: access purpose-oriented, eased to the forecaster. Scheme more suited to integrate to/with other data (overlays, specific links). Better for identification of limitations and to organize devs. (e.g. on-going improvements on SAFNWC air-mass product tendencies, initiation with rapid-scan). SAI tendencies, “new”: Time&space filtering of cloudiness. 24h, 6:00, 3h, last 3 SAI+cloud (Part of) experim. page with “new” conv. sub-entries SAI tendencies, “op.”: (6h), 3h, 1h, last SAI+cloud 2nd Convection Workshop, Landshut, 8-10oct2009 5 www.aemet.es
