  1. Today’s Agenda • AOK: No more bystanders! • Notes: Spanish American War. • Newspaper Teams: decide what articles to write. • HW: Section 3 reading guide (if you have put it off this long) and begin to write your article (be able to cut & paste it at the computer lab).

  2. The Spanish American War

  3. WHEN? Did the war start? End? When does class end? When does the weekend begin?

  4. A really short war, no matter what dates you use… START DATE END DATE August 12th…last battle December 10th…Paris Peace Treaty signed February 6th, 1899… Congress ratifies (accepts) the peace treaty April 11th…treaty comes into law • April 23rd, 1898…when Spain declares war • April 25th…when Congress declares war • April 20th…the date Congress says they meant to declare war • April 21st…the date Congress changed it to later. Why? Who knows? • May 1st…the first battle at Manila Bay.

  5. WHY… Does the U.S. want war with Spain? Won’t Spain let Cuba be free? Do Cubans want to be independent?

  6. I want YOU…to go to war. • Because policies like reconcentration are barbaric. (see photo) • Because we have a lot of investments like sugar plantations in Cuba. • Because Spain sank the Maine! (hey, that rhymes!) • Because the newspaper told me to be mad. I am YELLOW with rage.

  7. HOW? Does the war begin?

  8. The “Maine” Event (now that’s punny)! Yellow Journalism!

  9. WHAT… Are the major events during and after the war?

  10. Crash Course(8:22)

  11. HOW? Does the war end?

  12. Treaty of Paris—12/10/1898 In regards to Cuba… What else do we win? Puerto Rico! Guam! The Philippines! (OK, we had to buy them). • Spain…OUT! • U.S. … OUT (eventually) • Teller Amendment: • We promise we won’t stay in Cuba. Seriously, we are leaving. Like, right now. • Platt Amendment • Well, we might be back. If you need liberty or freedom or yadayadayada…stop asking so many questions!

  13. Analyze.

  14. After the Treaty Irony • Saying you hate how Europe imperializes places around the world… • And then imperializing places around the world.

  15. Jingoists vs. Anti-Imperialists “I am opposed to having the eagle put its talons on any other land.”—Mark Twain
