  2. 1) What was the way of protecting yourself against disease before Jenner? INOCULATION

  3. 2) How did this work? Injecting the body with a tiny amount of blood from an infected person, so that inoculated person would develop an immunity to the disease (often this didn’t work)

  4. Smallpox 3) Which disease did Jenner discover a vaccine for?

  5. They got cowpox but never small pox 4) What had he noticed about milkmaids?

  6. 5) What did he do to test his theory, and overall how many times did he do his experiment? He injected a boy with cowpox, and after a week injected him with smallpox. He was fine! Jenner did his experiment 23 times!

  7. 6) What was this process called, and why? VACCINATION! “Vacca” – Latin for cow

  8. The idea that a disease from a cow could protect humans seemed crazy to many People don’t like new ideas! 7) Why did some people oppose his ideas?

  10. 9) Although he saved hundreds of thousands of lives, what was the limitation of his work? Jenner did not understand how vaccination actually worked
