  1. FACET:The Proposal Process with Q & A Carsten Hast SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory

  2. FACET: A National User Facility • National User Facilities are DOE’s research flag ships and provide excellent infrastructure to the community (funding) • Your FACET User Organization will be there to help • FACET proposals are reviewed by SAREC FACET User Meeting August 2011

  3. FACET: ANational User Facility Experimental Evaluation • SLAC Accelerator Research Experimental program Committee • Appointed by Accelerator Research Division Head • SAREC Charge: • Evaluate the merit of proposed R&D in SLAC’s experimental accelerator research facilities for advancing world-class accelerator science or accelerator technology • Evaluate the feasibility of proposed R&D in SLAC’s accelerator research facilities • Review the progress of existing R&D in SLAC’s accelerator research facilities • 1st SAREC Review was January 10th - 12th 2011 • 2nd SAREC Review in January 2012 (2 days) FACET User Meeting August 2011

  4. Already Approved Experiments • For each SAREC review present status, achievements, publications and plans • You can assume that SAREC members will remember your experiments, so only a short introduction will be needed • Submit a Request for Beam Time (by November 15th) • Describe major changes in sufficient details • Technical changes will be evaluated by FACET Division • Prepare a talk for the SAREC meeting • Both, achievements and plans will be evaluated by SAREC • SAREC will give preference to continuing experiments • But run time is not guaranteed FACET User Meeting August 2011

  5. New Experiment Proposals • Prepare written proposal outlining your experiment (detailed) • Physics • Personnel • Detailed experimental description • Submit by deadline (October 15th) • Evaluation by FACET Division (FD) for safety and executabilty • If necessary PIs are asked for additional information • FDwill prepare non judgmental statements to SAREC • Present to SAREC • SAREC will prepare written evaluations • Run time is allocated by the FACET Division following SAREC’s evaluation, recommendation and practical considerations FACET User Meeting August 2011

  6. New Test Beam Proposals • Prepare written proposal outlining your experiment (short) • Physics • Personnel • Detailed experimental description • Submit to FACET Division Director anytime • Evaluation by FACET Division for safety and executabilty • If necessary PIs are asked for additional information • Short beam time requests will be granted by FACET Division • You might be asked to present your research at a future User or SAREC meeting FACET User Meeting August 2011

  7. Letter of Intent • Prepare written LoIoutlining your experiment • Physics • Personnel • Experimental description (as much as you know) • Submit by November 15th • Evaluation by FACET Division for safety and executabilty • If necessary PIs are asked for additional information • Present to SAREC • If appropriate, SAREC will prepare written evaluations FACET User Meeting August 2011

  8. After Your Experiment is Approved • Detailed technical evaluation by FACET Division (FD) • Experimental Readiness Review • Safety • Ways to combine with existing infrastructure • Enough personnel for operation • etc. • Your timely cooperation with FD is most necessary • Before operation • PI will sign that his/her experiment is ready to receive beam and that it is safe to do so • Operations Manager will sign that all necessary personnel is available and trained • FACET Division Director will sign that the experiment is safe, poses no harm to the facility or others and is ready to go FACET User Meeting August 2011
