Carbohydrates • Sugars and starches contained in foods • Primary energy source • 2 types of carbohydrates – Simple and Complex • Simple carbohydrates (sugars) –found in fruit drinks, candy, cake, cookies and table sugars • Complex carbohydrates (starches) – bread, rice, pasta, beans, and other vegetables that contain fiber. • Fiber – tough stringy part of raw fruits, raw vegetables, whole wheat and other whole grains. • Fiber can not be digested
PROTEINS • Nutrients that provide the building blocks your body needs for growth • Help to make skin, bone, and tissue • Promotes healing and aid in the repair of tissues • Protein is found in meat, eggs, dried beans and nuts
FATS • Nutrients found in fatty animal tissue and plant oils • Helps keep skin healthy • Source of energy • Good Fats - Unsaturated Fats • Unsaturated Fats (good fats) fish, nuts, and oils that contain unsaturated fat • Saturated Fats and Trans fats (bad fats) fried foods, margarine, and oils that contain saturated fat
