  1. Do Now • Recall how popular games, films, and literary works portrayed life during the Middle ages. Please write down 5 or 6 characteristics of medieval life that you can think of.

  2. Feudalism & Manor LifeChapter 17 Section 3 Big Idea: A complex web of duties & obligations governed relationships between people in the Middle Ages.

  3. Review (Do not Write) Emergence • After fall of Roman Empire, Europe became… • Unstable…Why? People needed protection? But how?

  4. Feudalism • System where lords gave land or a Fief (an estate) to Vassals (lesser lords) • In return they pledged loyalty & military service (40 days a year) (Feudal Contract). Grant protection Taxes

  5. Life of a Noble • Knight- • Mounted Warrior • Squire- • Age 7 sent away • Trained to ride & fight • As Feudal warfare diminished • Tournaments- took its place • Early tournaments were Dangerous • Later became celebrations

  6. Castles (Fortified homes ) • Constructed to withstand attacks • Strongholds- Keep, Curtain wall, turrets, moat, & barbican • Warfare centered seizing castles • Location often depended on attacks • Rivers, harbors, & mountain passes • Success of castles depended on amount of supplies • Siege, catapults, trebuchet, battering ram

  7. Peasant & Manor Life • Manor- estate owned by knight or lord • Serfs-(peasants) lived hard often a short life. • Life expectancy 40 yrs • Meat was a rare treat • Bound to land • One room huts, little furniture, no chimneys = no fires

  8. Agricultural Revolution • High Middle Ages (1000-1300 AD) • 1000 A.D. Europe began to stabilize. • Economic recovery lasted from 1000-1300 AD Why???

  9. New technologies Iron Plows- Harness for horses helped farmers speed up work. More food = More people Windmills- In 300yrs- Population doubled in Europe 2-field system to a 3-field system which made fields more productive.

  10. Review • With a partner discuss and write down 3 things that you learned today from class be ready to share with the class.
