Daily Routine • Practice private devotions to God as soon as they wake up • Family prayers which includes scripture and catechizing of their children and servants • Kept a spiritual diary to account the graces of the day and give thanks to God • Thought that they must live a God-fearing way • If they did not read the Bible, it was thought that they worship the Devil • No labor could be done on the Sabbath • In the church, the men sat on one side and the women sat on the other. Boys did not sit with their parents but in a designated pew and were force to be silent while deacons sat in the 1st pew because it was believed to be the closet to God • Churches were unheated so women carried small footstoves with hot coals

  3. Dress • Wore drab-colored clothing that were long and could not show knee or any skin

  4. Historical Events • Started in the 16th century as a movement to reform the Church of England • Were a part of the Salem Witch Trials

  5. Belief System • Believed in predestination • Belief in Jesus and participation in sacraments could not alone effect one’s salvation and God chooses salvation • Believed that those of different religions were evil so they hung them • Developed from the teachings of religious reformers like John Wycliffe and John Calvin • Bible was the True Law of God • Stressed grace, devotion, prayer, and self-examination

  6. Position of Women • Women could not participate in town meetings and were excluded from decision making in the church • Played a crucial part in the family’s economy • Men mistrusted women • Men thought of them as daughters of Eve, greedy for both power and sexual gratification

Random Facts • Began s a taunt or insult applied by Anglicans to those who criticized or wished to “purify” the Church of England • Two Groups- “separating” like Plymouth colonists who believed that the Church of England was corrupt and true Christians must separate themselves from it and non-separating such as Massachusetts Bay Colonists who believed in reform but not separation

  8. Random Fact cont… • Believed that when a woman was pregnant with a male they turned rosy and pink and with a female would turn pale • Names such as patience, Silence, Fear, Prudence, Comfort, Hopestill, and Be fruitful were found in the census of women’s names

Random Facts cont… • The 1st puritans disapproved of Christmas celebrations • Banned games of chance, maypoles, and drama on moral grounds • Banned toasting because they felt it led to wasting God’s gift of beer and wine • Mainly females were publicly punished for not withholding to sexual marital duties • Believed evil witches followed them to the New World • 95% of witch executions were in the New England Colonies • Thought Devil was alive
