  1. ITPA Joint Experiments (JEXs)- Possible NSTX Participation - Preparation for IEA Mtg on ITPA Joint Experiments MIT, Dec. 11-13, 2008

  2. Purpose of IEA/JEX meeting is for ITPA chairs, program leaders to discuss JEXs proposed at ITPA meetings • Do the proposed JEXs adequately address the major ITER/ITPA issues? • Is there sufficient emphasis on the high priority (~2 year term) issues? • Are there any additional JEXs that should be proposed? • Program leaders to commit to the experiments/activities at the meeting (or within a month or so) • CommitConsiderNot Doing Done • “JEXs” also include collaborative analysis • Joint Activities is a better title

  3. JEXs for consideration • Transport and Confinement • TC-1: Confinement scaling in ELMy H-modes: beta degradation • Weakly-shaped plasmas with Li to eliminate ELMs (~1/2 day) • TC-2: Hysteresis and access to H-mode with H~1 • Do as part of TC-4 • TC-4: Species dependence of L-H threshold • HHFW in He, HHFW, NBI in D (also assess Ip scaling) • TC-6: Transport dependence of high performance ops on ExB shear and external momentum input • Completed as part of Joule milestone; NSTX to provide results • TC-9: Scaling of intrinsic rotation with no momentum input • Provide ERD data; perform XPs using RF pulses (RF torque) • TC-10: Exptl ID of ITG/TEM/ETG turb and comparison to codes • Ongoing; no dedicated XP • TC-11: He transport in hybrid, AT, ITB, etc. scenarios • Can (should) we participate? • TC-12: H-mode transport in low aspect ratio • NSTX portion of NSTX/DIII-D similarity expt; transport with Lithium • TC-15: Dependence of momentum and particle pinch on collisionality • Extend ’08 Joule studies to different collisionality (vary Ip, BT at constant q); SSGI for particle pinch?

  4. Macro • MDC-2: RWM studies • Assess validity of critical rotation; assess RWM trigger mechanisms • MDC-4: NTM aspect ratio studies • NSTX to do 2/1 destabilization expts; island width and effect of beta • MDC-12: Non-resonant magnetic braking • Continue experiments with n=2,3; counter-rotation? • MDC-13: Vertical stability physics and performance limits in highly elongated plasmas • n=1 noise level assessment • MDC-14: Rotation effects on NTM • Marginal island width studies before and after Li application; error fields and thresholds (“twofer” with MDC-4) • MDC-15: Disruption database development • Add NSTX data; emphasis on halo current data • MDC-17: Physics-based disruption avoidance • Feedback stabilization of low-n modes; fast current ramp-down

  5. SOL and Divertor • DSOL-15: Multi-machine characteristics of blobs • Done; NSTX provided data to J. Terry • DSOL-17: Introduction of pre-characterized dust in devier and SOL • Use Li dropper • Pedestal • PEP-6: Pedestal structure and ELM stability in DN • PEP-16: C-Mod/MAST/NSTX Small ELM regimes comparison • Done? • PEP-19: Basic mechanisms of edge transport with RMPs in toroidal plasma confinement devices • Transport, particle pump-out, impact on limiter and divertor H-modes, evaluate convective cells, introduction of thermoelectric currents by gas puffing • PEP-23: Quantification of the requirements for ELM suppression by magnetic perturbations from internal off-midplane coils • NSTX personnel to be involved in MAST experiments • PEP-25: Inter-machine comparison of ELM control by magnetic field perturbations from midplane RMP coils • ELM pacing • Energetic Particles • EP-1: Measurement of damping rate of intermediate mode number AEs • Is there a role for NSTX? • EP-2: Fast ion losses and redistribution from localized AEs • Do in H-mode

  6. Integrated Operation Scenarios • IOS-4.1: Access conditions for hybrid with ITER-relevant restrictions • Recipes for obtaining regime (q(r), power, rotation, shape,…) • IOS-5.1: Ability to obtain and predict off-axis NBCD • Offset plasma vertically?; On-axis injection results? • IOS-5.2: ICRH local gas fueling requirements for coupling • Includes plasma-antenna distance optimization, as fueling for improving coupling; NSTX has already done much on this.

  7. TSG Leaders • Please address these JEXs and decide on NSTX participation (commit, consider, not do, done) by end of Research Forum. • Thanks!
