Here are the science standards we will review and/or learn about. 5.P.2.2 - Compare the weight of an object to the sum of the weight of its parts before and after an interaction. 5.P.3.1- Explain the effects of the transfer of heat (either by direct contact or at a distance) that occurs between objects at different temperatures. (conduction, convection or radiation) 5.L.1.2 - Compare the major systems of the human body (digestive, respiratory, circulatory, muscular, skeletal, and cardiovascular) in terms of their functions necessary for life.

  3. This is AlbinaShagimuratova, who played The Queen of the Night, in The San Francisco Opera’s version of The Magic Flute.

  4. As you can see, her costume looks heavy! • Let’s say: • The headdress has a mass of 1.25kg. • Her dress’ mass is 1.5 kg. • Her shoes are about 1kg.

  5. Let’s say: • The singer’s mass is about 65kg.

  6. Find the total mass of the singer AND her costume.

  7. Now, an activity for you! • Use the recording chart, below: • Weigh yourself, then, using the conversation tool at the following web site, convert to metric units: http://www.worldwidemetric.com/measurements.html • Find the mass of your shoes, your coat, and any easily removable layer of clothing (like a jacket or sweater) and record this data on the chart, too.

Now, wearing the extra layer of clothing, enjoy a dance and sing-a-long party with your classmates. • Here are some links you and your classmates might like: • Click here for “Gangum Style.” • Click here for “Teach Me How to Dougie.” • Click here for “Macarena.” • Click here for “Wobble Baby.” • (Teachers use discretion about which songs you pick based on your class. You may not want to use the projector in your room, as the videos may contain some objectionable content.)

  9. Now - Use the recording chart, below: • Weigh yourself with the extra layers on. Convert to metrics. • Weigh yourself with out the extra layers. • You can assume the shoes and other items did not lose or gain weight during your dance party.

  10. Did you notice any changes in mass/weight after the dance party? • Did you notice any changes in the way you felt? • Do you think the same dance party would have been easier/more fun without wearing the extra layers of insulation?

  11. Now, spend some time working with a partner. Add your thoughts about what you think happens to your body during a performance. What systems are working/working together to create the performance? How does a performer’s physical health and fitness impact his/her performance?
