  2. By 1867… • Confederation is on the horizon • People of African descent had a presence in almost all regions of the soon to be born country • Who were they??? (Keep in mind the population may be DESCENDANTS of these groups) • Free blacks, Black Loyalists, Jamaican Maroons (very few), Black Refugees, escaped slaves Settlers in the West (from OK, California)

  3. Racism north of the border? • Despite the abolition of slavery happening in 1833 in this area….there still was… • Klu Klux Klan presence • Social customs often led to segregation & unfair treatment of people of African descent • Fear that what was happening in the US would “trickle up” North of the border
