  14. What is STEM Insight? INSIGHT INTO MODERN INDUSTRY Learn how all the parts of the business work, what roles and skills are needed, the breadth of career possibilities and the variety of routes into jobs, particularly technical paths and apprenticeships. INSIGHT INTO UNIVERSITY Learn about the rapidly evolving and increasingly inter-disciplinary courses available, the breadth of opportunities for study and research, the roles and skills needed, and the variety of career paths beyond. Use this insight to inspire students and better prepare them for Higher Education.

  15. Real-life experiences with STEM Insight “Before the programme, I didn’t feel I had sufficient knowledge of STEM careers to talk with confidence. Now I am equipped with up-to-date knowledge, real examples and experiences, as well as strong industry links that I can use to benefit the whole school. I believe this makes me a more effective and inspiring teacher. This was a really valuable experience with long-term benefits” Alice Kupara Thomas Deacon Academy STEM Insight participant 2016

  16. Why take part? STEM Insight can help to build a relationship with a major employer near you, possibly securing placements for your students or progression routes via apprenticeships. Find out about the local job market and the competencies that need to be taught in the ‘underpinning knowledge’ section of T levels.

  17. What does a placement involve? INSIGHT INTO MODERN INDUSTRY Overview of the business, key projects and processes. Tours, site visits, shadowing staff, understanding of recruitment, outreach support, time with apprentices, interns, graduates, management, etc… INSIGHT INTO UNIVERSITY Overview of the department, research areas and teaching faculties. Opportunity to attend seminars, lectures, lab / workshop sessions. Discussions with students, lecturers, researchers and UCAS applications, etc…

  21. 22. Real-life experiences with STEM Insight “I now know that until you step through the doors of a company you can’t really understand what you are actually preparing young people for. The reality is that we are preparing our students for the workplace not for league table success – it is imperative that staff are therefore in tune with the reality of the workplace and understand the working environment, the demands and the opportunities” Marie Jobson Churchill Community College STEM Insight participant 2016
