New Amsterdam was taken over by the British in 1644 (renamed New York). ~A rivalry between the French & British grew during this time ~Gold: Explorers wanted to find gold & silver which would give them & Spain wealth & power ~They often exchanged furs for goods with the Native Americans. They had a peaceful relationship. ~Other English settlers came for religious freedom ~Glory: To be hailed as a hero in Spain
