Ahaz continues his wickedness2K 16:10-18; 2Chr 28:22-25 • Asking Tiglath-Pileser for help against Syria and Israel was not pleasing to God • Ahaz was pleased that he made the attack on Damascus and he goes there to meet him • The relationship between Ahaz and Tiglath-Pileser did not help Ahaz • While in Damascus, Ahaz offered sacrifice to the gods of the Syrians

Ahaz continues his wickedness2K 16:10-18; 2Chr 28:22-25 • Ahaz said, “Since the gods of the king of Syria helped defeat me, I will offer sacrifice to them and perhaps they will help me.” • This proved to be another step downward • Ahaz liked the looks of the altar • Sent a pattern to Urijah the priest in Jerusalem • Urijah had one made and it was ready when Ahaz returned • He had the brazen alter moved. • He had it saved so he could inquire of God (when needed)

  10. Ahaz continues his wickedness2K 16:10-18; 2Chr 28:22-25 • Ahaz offers sacrifices to the gods of Damascus • Ahaz set aside the worship to Jehovah • Articles of temple dismantled • He finally shut the door of the house of Jehovah • This was the 12th year of Ahaz

Death of Ahaz 2 K 16:19-20; 2 Chr 28:26 Three years into the reign of Hoshea, Ahaz died and was buried in Jerusalem but not with other kings Hezekiah begins 2 K 18:1-20:21; 2 Chr 28:27-32:33 Hoshea reigns 2 K 15:30; 17:1-18:12 Hoshea made a conspiracy against Pekah and slew him Hoshea reigned 9 yrs He was evil but not as bad as the kings before him More about Hoshea in next lesson 12 th year of Ahaz king of Judah began Hoshea to reign in Israel

Hezekiah’s character2 K 18:3-7; 2 Chr 29:2 • He was the best king in Judah since David • He removed the high places, smashed sacred stones, cut down Asherah poles 2 K 18:4 • Broke in pieces the brazen serpent which Moses had made many years ago Nu 21:4 • They were sacrificing to it as a god 2K 18:4 • Hezekiah kept the commandments that the Lord gave as his father David did 2 C 29:2 • The Lord was with him as he ruled

Cleansing the Temple 2 Chr 29:3 • What had Ahaz done to the Temple? 28:21 • Hezekiah in the first month of reign opened the doors and repaired them v3 • Gathered the priest and Levites v4 • Consecrate yourselves and the temple of Jehovah v5 • Remove all defilement • Our fathers were unfaithful to Jehovah, and turned away from His dwelling place; v6

  14. 2 Chr 29:6 For our fathers have trespassed, and done that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD our God, and have forsaken him, and have turned away their faces from the habitation of the LORD, and turned their backs. 7Also they have shut up the doors of the porch, and put out the lamps, and have not burned incense nor offered burnt offerings in the holy place unto the God of Israel. 

  15. Cleansing the Temple 2 Chr 29:3 • They shut the doors of the temple and put out the lamps • The wrath of Jehovah has fallen on Judah • This is why our fathers fell by the sword • This is why our sons and daughters and wives are in captivity 2 K 29:9 • I will make a covenant with the Lord our God so he will turn his wrath from us v 10 • Do not neglect to stand before Him & serve Him v 11

  16. Cleansing the Temple 2 Chr 29:3 • We are wicked so we are being punished • We must turn back to Jehovah • The covenant had not been renewed since the days of Jehoiada when Joash was King 2 K 11:17-20 • The Levites went to work purifying the temple • Unclean things brought out • They were dumped in the Kidron Valley v16

  17. Temple Re-Dedicated 2 Chr 29:20 • After purifying finished • Officials of the city gathered and sacrifices were offered, ceremonies held which set the temple worship in operation v 20 • V 21-28 tells of sacrifices and music • When they finished all the sacrifices, the king and all that were present bowed and worshiped the LORD v 29

  18. Preparation for Passover feast2 Chr 30:1-12 • Passover was to be celebrated on the first month of each year • There had not been enough priest consecrated neither had the people assembled • Decision was made to celebrate it the 2nd month Nu 9:10 • Invitations were sent throughout Israel from Dan to Beersheba asking all Israel to share in the Passover

Preparation for Passover feast2 Chr 30:1-12 • The decree went out: • People of Israel turn to the Lord • If you do He will turn to you v 6 • Do not be like your fathers who were unfaithful v 7 • Come to the sanctuary and serve the Lord v 8 • Some ridiculed the decree and others humbled themselves and went to worship in Jerusalem v10

  20. The keeping of the passover2 Chr 30:13-27 • A large crowd gathered to keep the feast v 13 • The Levites were ashamed of negligence and consecrated themselves for worship v 15 • Those not clean in the camp waited for the Levites to kill the passover lamb for them v 17 • Hezekiah prays to God in their behalf v 18 • The children of Israel kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with great gladness: The LORD was praised in worship & singing with instruments unto the LORD v 21

  21. The keeping of the passover2 Chr 30:13-27 • Hezekiah spoke kindly to all the Levites that taught the knowledge of the LORD verse 22 • Great sacrifice given by Hezekiah v 24 • There was great joy in Jerusalem: for since the time of Solomon and David it had not been like this in Jerusalem v 26 • Priest and Levites blessed the people v 27 • Their prayer was heard in Heaven v 27
