1. Call to adventure • The hero receives a challenge, accepts it, and sets off on the journey • The challenge is usually VERY important • The hero is usually the ONLY one who can meet it
2. Trials • Hero meets obstacles which test his resolve and courage (meets “tempters” that will try and pull him off the path) • Usually one trial stands at the threshold, after which there is no turning back. • Trials may occur up to the Supreme Test
3. The soul guide • The hero receives advice, insight, or a magical tool from one or more helpers.
4. Dark night of the soul • Hero feels lost, helpless, and trapped • Events have moved beyond his control • His only hope is to live moment to moment and survive by his wits
5. The supreme test • The hero meets the ultimate challenge • This test determines the final outcome
6. Balancing of emotion (the transformation) • The hero achieves his heart’s desire, and the conflict is resolved. Common themes: • Recognition from father • Healing form pain or freedom from past • Union with lady-love
7. Return to society • Society benefits from the hero’s • Wisdom • Strength/power • The life he will now lead • The examples his life has provided for others to follow even after his death. (i.e Christ)
