  2. Gestalt Psychologists Kurt Koffka Max Wetheimer Wolfgang Kohler Psychologists established the theoretical and experimental basis of Gestalt Psychology
  3. Gestalt Theory Gestalt means “whole” Based on observation that we often experience things that aren’t apart of our simple sensations. We are built to experience the structured whole as well as the individual sensations. Well known for its concept of insight learning. (solving a problem by means of the recognition of a gestalt or organizing principle)
  4. Gestalt Laws Law of Pragnanz: Says we are innately driven to experience things in as good a gestalt as possible. Law of Closure: Says if something is missing in an otherwise complete figure we will tend to add it. Law of Similarity: Says we will tend to group similar items together, to see them as forming a gestalt within a larger form.
  5. Isomorphism Suggests there is some clear similarity in the gestalt patterning of stimuli and of the activity in the brain while we are perceiving the stimuli.

  7. Kurt Koffka Born and educated in Berlin Earned a PhD Promoted new psychology in Europe and introduced it to the US Education was in hands of an English speaking governess and his mother’s brother fostered his early interests in philosophy and science
  8. Koffka (cont.) New approach rejected the mechanistic psychology of the 19th century, which, had attempted to reduce experience and perception into smaller components or sensations. Favored a holistic approach to perception Responsible for systematizing Gestalt psychology into a coherent body of theories
  9. Wolfgang Kohler January 21, 1887-June 11, 1967 Born in Reval Estonia Raised around teachers, nurses and other scholars Liked science, art, and music Studied at the University of Tubingen, University of Bonn, University of Berlin
