2. Introduction Decades to be covered: 50’s -70’s These decades cover the first twenty-eight years of my life and how music fits into it. Technological advances: the computer going from a wall-sized unit down to a personal unit.

3. 1950 – 1959 Sep 1951 my father is killed in Korea, I am born February 1952; August 1952 my mother remarries, my half-brother is born May 1953, my half-sister is born July 1958. Music: Rock-a-Billy; Doo-Wop; Country & Western, and Rock-N-Roll Society & Culture: The first Baby Boomer became a teenager Education: Max Wertheimer and Thorndike were losing influence over education while Skinner was gaining educational influence; School equality was settled with Brown vs. Board of Education Work: Farmers were switching over from horse and mule power to tractors; screwworms are eliminated Technology: The Computer Age is sprouting. Toffler’s Waves: First wave is long gone, Second Wave is near extinction; the third wave is just sprouting.

4. 1960 – 1969 Toffler’s Waves: Third Wave is developing Work: Farmers use mechanical cotton-pickers Education: Elementary and Secondary Education Act; Vygotsky’s influence begins influencing education; Herbert Kohl promotes “Open Education”; Bilingual Education Act takes affect; Project “Head Start” starts; Equality of Educational Opportunity Study and Jerome Bruner influences education; REA authorizes rural educational TV Society & Culture: Shirley Chisholm begins her short years of service; The Civil Rights Act is passed Music: Soul, Rhythm & Blues begins; the British Invasion; the Psychedelic Bands come into fashion

5. 1970 – 1979 Received a deferment to stay out of Vietnam; graduated high school (1970), took a bus to Kentucky and found out I was accepted into college; graduate Lamar University (1974) BS Elementary Education –specialization Special Education; I get married (1974)moved three times; first daughter is born (1977). First teaching job (1974 – 1975) severely handicapped children; second teaching position (1976 – 1978) rural high school slow learners, third teaching position (1978 -1979) slow learners elementary school. My income less than $500/mo. Joined the military for the benefits. Music: Punk Rock- a rebellion against Super Groups of the 70’s Education: Marian Edelman starts Children’s Defense Fund; Pennsylvania supports retarded children getting a free education; nationally, The Education of All Handicapped Children Act; Indian Education Act for indigenous American Indians; Title IX; National Association of Bilingual Education Work: No-tillage becomes popular: Plant Variety Protection Act; Paul Berg is molecular scientist working with DNA strands Technology: ARPANET begins packet-switching network that initiates the beginning of the Internet

6. Conclusion The main transactions occurring during these three decades were the shifting of workers from farms to the cities and the advances leading to the beginning of the Internet and the down-sizing of the computer itself from a wall-to-wall model to the establishment of personal computers.
