  2. Nero 37-68 AD the fire at 64 AD • Executed Christians for their alleged involvement in the fire of 64 • He crucified St Peter. • Only in Rome

  3. Diocletian: 284-305 • His self-image as a restorer of past Roman glory, presaged the most pervasive persecution in Roman history • mass execution and savage torture of the Copts

  4. Diocletian: 284-305 • Edicts limiting legal rights of Christians. • Later edicts targeted the clergy ordering all inhabitants to sacrifice to the gods.

  5. Diocletianic Persecution 303 -311 AD • largest, and bloodiest official persecution of Christianity • He would not stop untill the blod reach his horse’s knee

Tetrarch • “Rule of Four” • Diocletian divided the empire into four and appointed fellow officers as delegates over each. • Maximian appointed as an Augustus; senior co-emperor • Galarius and Constantius appointed as caesars; junior co-emperor • Each emperor ruled over a fourth of the Roman empire

  7. Galarius304 AD • Following Maximian’s orders he issued Edict to persecute Christians. 308 • He became more angery when the christians did not feer death. He mastered new inventions to persecute them. • Finaly he got sick, it is said that he converted to christinaity in his last days. • Galerius died in 311 from a horribly gruesome disease, possibly some form of bowel cancer, gangrene or Fournier gangrene.

Maximian • He executed Pope Peter the 18th the last Martyr • He stopped killing Christians as he got busy with fitting with Constantine In 310, Maximian rebelled against Constantine while the emperor was on campaign against the Franks. Maximian had been sent south to Arles with part of Constantine's army to defend against attacks by Maxentius in southern Gaul. In Arles, Maximian announced that Constantine was dead and took up the imperial purple. In spite offering bribes to any who would support him as emperor, most of Constantine's army remained loyal, and Maximian was compelled to leave. Constantine soon heard of the rebellion,

End of eraConstantius • His father was a military officer named Constantius or Constantius I, his mother a woman of humble background named Helena (later St. Helena). • In 293AD, he was given the rank of Caesar in the First Tetrarchy organized by Diocletian. On this occasion he was required to marry Theodora, the daughter of Maximian. • Upon the retirement of Diocletian and Maximian on 1 May 305 Constantius succeeded to the rank of Augustus.

  10. End of eraConstantius • Edict of Milan 313 • The Edict of Milan was a letter signed by emperors Constantine I and Licinius that proclaimed religious toleration in the Roman Empire. The letter was issued in 313 AD, shortly after the conclusion of the Diocletianic Persecution
