INTRODUCTION • NARO attaches great importance on nutrition as stated in: - • 2008/9- 2017/18 Strategic Plan • Mission Statement • National Agricultural Programme (Mid-term) • NARO through its 6 PARIs and 8 ZARDIs, has integrated nutrition in Agric. Res. • Through strategic breeding and value-addition processes to incorporate essential nutrients in staple foods. Nutritionalisation of Agric. Uganda 11-12 Aug 2010, Munyonyo Kampala

Target research areas • Macro/Micro nutrient deficiencies • Micro-nutrients e.g. Vitamin A, Fe and iodine • Macro-nutrients – proteins and fats • Increased yields as a strategy to ensure food security • Disease resistance • Post-harvest loss • Food safety to guarantee health of consumers Nutritionalisation of Agric.   4. Completed or On-going Nutritional research • Biofortification through breeding using both conventional and molecular procedures. Examples include: - • Incorporation of Vit. A in sweet potatoes (conventional) • Incorporation of Vit. A, Fe and Zn in bananas (molec.) • Enhancement of protein (lysine and tryptophan) content in maize (Longe 5) - conventional • Improvement of aroma and yield through efficient use of nitrogen in rice (conventional) Nutritionalisation of Agric.   5. Nutritional Research……. • Value-addition processes : - • Fortification of wheat and vegetable oils with Vit. A • Extrusion and fortification – ready-to-eat food products made from cassava/sweet potato and fortified with Vit. A and Fe for children under 5 years and Zn for other vulnerable groups • Safety related activities : - • Agro-chemical residues in crops and animal products • Anti-biotic and acaricides in animal products (dairy and meats including poultry) • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in smoked products Nutritionalisation of Agric. Challenges • Bio-safety policy issues related to bio-modified products • Consumer acceptance of bio-modified crops/ products • Reaching the vulnerable members of society with technologies/info to improve their nutritional status • Packaging • Lack of ideal labs for shelf-life studies for developed products • Limited capacity both human and financial Nutritionalisation of Agric.
