  3. 9.5- Push for Equality • 1948- segregation of the military ended. • African Americans hoped that their achievements during World War II would help them end discrimination at home.

African American Athletes • Jesse Owens- son of a sharecropper and grandson of a slave- won 4 gold medals • Joe Lewis- heavy weight boxing champion • Marian Anderson- concert singer from Philadelphia • These black athletes and performers helped to win African Americans recognition and respect.
