  2. Order of Operations When using the calculator it is important to remember that it may become necessary to put some parts of the equation in parenthesis, such as fractions. Compare the two lines in (a) and then review the two lines in (b). Order of operations apply when using the calculator. Make sure you properly input the equation. a) b)

  3. Squaring and Square Roots a) a) b) b) Above are two different examples of how to enter raising a number to the second power. 1. Type in the number you want squared. Press the symbol [ ^ ] and then 2 (a), Then press “ENTER” to get the answer. or 2. As in (b) you can type in the number then use the square key [ x² ]. Press “ENTER” to get the result. Both give you the same results. • When you want to find the square root of a number do the following: • Press the key in yellow [2nd] • The screen will display line (a). • Enter the number and closed parenthesis. (b) • Press “ENTER” to get the answer.

  4. Cubed and Cube Root • When you want to find the cube root of a number you need to: • Press the “MATH” key. You will see the screen in (a) • Arrow down to 4 or press the number 4 on the key pad. • Enter your number followed by a close parenthesis. • Press “ENTER” to get the result. (b) a) b) • You can raise a number to the third power in a similar manner: • Enter a number that you want to take to the third power (c) • Press the “MATH” key to see the screen in (a) • Arrow down to 3 or press the number 3 on the keyboard. • Press “ENTER” to get the answer. c)

  5. Roots • To determine the root of a number follow these steps: • Enter the root number (b) • Press “MATH” button. • Choose the number 5 on the keyboard or put in the number 5. (a) • Then you need to enter the number to be rooted. • Press “ENTER” for the answer. a) b)

Decimals and Fractions • To change a decimal to a fraction follow these steps: • Enter the equation and the result (b) • Press “MATH” key to get the screen in (a) • Arrow to [1 : Frac] or press the number one on the key pad • Your screen will show the first part of line (c) • Then press the ENTER key to get the fraction as shown on the right of line (c) a) b) • Changing a fraction to a decimal do these steps: • Enter your fraction ie…2/5. • Press the “MATH” key to see the screen in (a). • Arrow to [ 2: Dec] or press the number two on the key pad. • Press “ENTER” for the answer. c) d)

  7. Absolute Value • To display the absolute value of a number look at line (a). • Press the “MATH” key. • Arrow to “NUM” on the top line. (a) • Press the number 1 or arrow to one. • Push the “ENTER” button • Put in your equation, close parenthesis. • Then “ENTER” a) b)

  8. Test Menu • To test for equality or inequality do the following: • Put in the number or the equation. ie…(450 in line b) • Press the yellow [2nd] key. • The press the “TEST” button located above the “MATH” button. • Choose the test you desire, see line (b) where the equal sign is used. • Enter the second part of the equation to be compared to the first. • Press “ENTER” • If the test is true a “1” will show or if it is false a “0” will appear on the screen. a) b) c) d)

  9. Answer Key a) • When it is necessary to progressively manipulate an answer to the preceding equation this is what you can do: • Solve an equation. (a) • Press the [2nd] key. • Press the “ANS” key, located at the [(-)] key (you will see Ans on the next line) • Continue by inserting the operation and the desired number. (b) • Press “ENTER” for the answer. • You can continue performing different operations (c) b) c) a) b) c)

  10. Repeating Calculations a) When problems require you to use an equation repeatedly with minor changes you can repeat the last equation entered and alter it as needed: 1. Enter your problem and get the result (a). 2. To display the original equation press [2nd] and then the “ENTER” key, the original problem will appear and can be edited by using the blue arrows [►], [INS], or [DEL] keys. 3. This can be done as many times as needed. Remember it repeats the last equation entered (c). b) c)

  11. Float Decimal Mode • Sometimes it is necessary to restrict the number of decimal places. Here is what you do: • Press the “MODE” button • Screen (b) will appear. If you keep the settings as they are the answer will be similar to line (a). • Use the arrows to go to the “Float” line. It will be flashing. • Move the flashing image to the decimal place requirement, in our case 3. (d) • Return to the main window by pressing the “CLEAR” button once. • If you press the yellow [2nd] button the original equation will reappear. When you press the “ENTER” button the answer will be rounded off to the specified decimal place entered. a) c) b) d)
