  1. Adminstrative Stuff The Dirty Truth • You need to pass this class to graduate. • MCAS counts. • Go on iParent. See what you are missing. Hand it in.Stay after to redo quizzes and tests. I am a resource. Until further notice… • Do now counts as a quiz. • Each Wednesday I will collect notebooks.

  2. Cells

  3. Cells

  4. Structure and Function What are the 7 themes of biology? PEESIES • Patterns of Change • Evolution • Energy Relationships • Structure and Function • Interacting Systems • Ethics • Stability Cells’ structures depend on the functions of the cells.

  5. Cells

  6. If you can imagine it in biology it already exists. Cells are specialized and their form depends on their function. What can cells do? What are the characteristics of life? Because cells are so specialized, it is difficult to draw a typical animal cell.

  7. Cell Diversity Cells are diverse in size… 2m to 0.2 micrometers Most cells are 10-50 micrometers in diameter. … and shape! … both within and amongst organisms.

  8. Cells Robert Hooke (1635- 1703) English monk who looked at cork

  9. Cell Timeline • Robert Hooke 1665– observed cork under microscope • Anton van Leeuwehoek 1675– first person to see living cells • MattiasSchleiden 1838– all plants were made up of cells • Theodor Schwann 1839– all animals were made up of cells • Rudolph Virchow 1855– cells only came from cells

  10. Discoveries lead toCell Theory Cell Theory • All living things are composed of one or more cells. • Cells are organisms basic unit of structure and function. • Cells come only from existing cells.

  11. No typical cell but… All eukaryotes (have a true nucleus) have 3 main components. • Cell membrane • Cytoplasm • DNA in the nucleus

  12. Cell membrane • Outer boundary of the cell • Separates cell from its surroundings and other cells • Composed of phospholipids It’s HW time!

  13. Cell membrane • Also called plasma membrane • Gives shape and flexibility to the cell • Is selectively permeable: it lets some molecules in and keeps others out (semi-permeable) • 7.5 to 10 nanometers thick • Composed of 2 layers of molecules– lipid bilayer

  14. Cell membrane

  15. Lipid Bilayer • 2 layers of molecules • Each layer is a sheet of lipids • Carboxyl (COOH) group head is on the outer surface of the sheet while the HC tail is on the inner surface • Proteins embedded in the sheets • Because each lipid molecule can move freely, it is called the fluid mosaic model

  16. Cytoplasm • Lies inside the cell membrane • Contains water and salts and organic molecules • Surrounds organelles • Not jelly-like but constantly streaming , constantly in motion http://www.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=48999

  17. DNA in the nucleus • The DNA is in the nucleus • Directs all the activities of the cell
