  1. What exactly is matter? “STUFF”

  2. 1. Matter makes up everything in the universe.

  3. Matter B. can change properties. Water Ice

  4. Matter C. is made up of three principaldifferent states gas liquid solid

  5. Matter D. has properties of hardness texture shape temperature and much more

  6. 2. What is matter made of? A. PURE SUBSTANCES: 1 kind of matter • Elements • Pure substances that can’t be broken down • oxygen = O2 • table salt, sugar NaCl CO2 • Compounds • Pure substance made of 2 or more elements • Carbon + 2 Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide CO2 • Hydrogen + Oxygen = H2O

  7. What is matter made of? B. NOT A PURE SUBSTANCE Mixtures - 2 or more substances mixed together • not chemically combined • Substances keep their properties • Solutions are the “best-mixed” mixture

  8. Changes in Matter • Physical change:alters the form, but not its identity • Chemical change:a substance that changes or combines to form a new substance Chemical activity: the ability of a substance to change

  9. Testing your knowledge…. In the photos, can you tell which is an element, compound, or mixture. Review: • An element contains just one type of atom. • A compound contains two or more different atoms joined together. • Amixturecontains two or more different substances that are only physically joined together, not chemically. • A mixture can contain both elements and compounds.
