The Ottoman Empire • Existed from about 1300 to 1922 • Worlds most powerful empire in the 1500’s and 1600’s • Declared themselves experts and devout followers of Sunni Islam • In 1453, the Ottomans conquered Constantinople, the capital of the once very powerful Byzantine Empire, • This led to the collapse of the empire • Constantinople became the new capital of the Ottoman empire and the center of Islamic thought

The Ottoman Empire • By the mid 1500’s the Ottoman Empire included Asia Minor (Turkey), the Balkans, and parts of North Africa, and Syria. • Sultan Suleiman I also known as Suleiman the Magnificent because of the impact he had on cultural achievements during his reign (1520-1566) • Islamic arts and sciences flourished. • During this time is when the Muslim world experienced its most profound level of unity since the time of Abbasid rule

The Ottoman Empire • In the 1700’s and 1800’s, the Ottoman Empire began to decline, mainly due to the development of the strong, new European countries • By the early 1900’s European colonial powers dominated a large part of the Muslim world and had a big impact on it economically, politically and culturally. • The Ottoman Empire dissolved completely with the creation of the nation of Turkey in 1923.

The Safavid Dynasty • The Safavid dynasty in Iran was the main rival of the Ottomans • They originated as Sufis, but converted to Shiism along with the rest of Iran in the 1500’s • The Safavids and the Ottomans fought against each other during the mid 1600’s, but neither side won, and both sides lost resources • The Safavids continued to rule Iran until 1722 when the empire began to crumble
