  3. Rules for Formatting your Essay in MLA • 12 ptTimes New Roman • 1 inch margins all around • Use a running header (Last name & page number) • Spacing- EVERYTHING is double-spaced including your Works Cited Page. • Heading- Double-spaced and in this order: Name Teacher Name (The person evaluating your work) Class (Name and period) Date (9 January 2012) No title page is needed!!

  5. Parenthetical Citations • The parenthetical citations direct readers to the full bibliographic citations listed in the Works Cited, located at the end of the document. In most cases, the parenthetical citations include the author's last name and the specific page number for the information cited. Following guidelines need to be followed in the essay.

  6. How to cite the author and page number • If the author's name is not used in the sentence introducing the source material, then include the author's last name in the parenthetical citation before the page number(s). • Note that no comma appears between the author's name and the page number(s). Also period goes at the end of the citation. • (Poe 356).

  7. Citing more than four authors like your history text book. • If a source has four or more authors, include the first author's last name followed by et al. (Latin for and others), either in the text or in the parenthetical citation. • Example • According to Appleby et al., states have… • (Appleby et al. 318).

  8. When no author is identified such as a web site • If a source does not include an author's name, substitute the title or an abbreviated title in the text or parenthetical citation. Italicize if the source is a book; if the source is an article, use quotation marks • Example • (“States Rights”)

  9. Writing your Works Cited Page • You start your Works Cited on a NEW PAGE. • Center your title • All entries are in alphabetical order • All entries need the second line indented five spaces. Check out the sample on the following slide.
