  2. Commitment to Co-operation The Welsh Government has made a commitment to support co-operative housing. It has: - • Set up a Co-operative Housing Stakeholder Group • Provided funding to the Wales Co-operative Centre to develop and mange the Co-operative Housing Project • Set a target for 500 co-operative homes • Investigate potential funding for co-operatively owned homes

  3. The Co-operative Housing Project • 2 year project currently to March 2014 • Research the market for co-operatively owned homes • Appoint specialist providers to a framework agreement • 10 projects per Annum • 50 Beneficiaries per Annum • 2 ‘Shovel Ready’ projects – March 2014

  4. Market Research • Research Commissioned • Jan 2013 • By Wales Co-operative Centre • With financial support from Welsh Gov. • Contract Awarded to CIH • Consumer research • 3 pioneer projects identified for focus

The pioneer projects • Three projects selected from ten identified developments : • Carmarthenshire: Proposed site attached to Supported Housing development in East Carmarthenshire • Cardiff: Site for approximately 50 homes to be developed in partnership with Cadwyn HA in West Cardiff • Newport: A Co-operative community within a larger development on a site in East Newport

Research Findings • High Rate of response to the initial e-mail • Household types who were over-represented in the response to the survey • people aged 25 to 34/ private tenants / households with children • The importance of community - most cited factor • Affordability and development of property based equity – important principle to attendees • Theimportance of security– particularly for those in PRS • Communal space- raised as important factor at each of event

Research Findings • Lack of understanding of financial models of co-operative housing • High interest in co-operative housing •  Co-operative housing an opportunity to down-size • Diversityand Equality –from information collected people from non-white background over-represented in Cardiff and Carmarthenshire, under-represented in Newport. • Co-housing - owner occupiers identified lack of a bridging mechanism to transfer from ownership to co-operative as a barrier
