  1. “Organic” Food

  2. Canadian Regulations 2006 • “Organic production is a holistic system designed to optimize the productivity and fitness of diverse communities within the agro-ecosystem, including soil organisms, plants, livestock and people. The principal goal of organic production is to develop enterprises that are sustainable and harmonious with the environment.” CAN/CGSB-32.310-2006

  3. Also in the regulation….. • “Neither this standard nor organic products in accordance with this standard represent specific claims about the health, safety and nutrition of such organic products.” • In other words, the government does not tell us that eating organic is healthier or safer than non-organic. This is up to you to decide!

  4. What qualifies a food as “organic” in the Canadian regulation? • No GMOs • No synthetic pesticides • No use of sewage sludge as fertilizer • No growth hormones • No irradiation of foods • No cloned animals (or descendents) • Limited use of antibiotics and synthetic veterinary drugs • No synthetic fungicide in any packaging.

  5. Maintain or improve the condition of the soil (no-tillage, crop rotation, windbreaks etc.) • Manure use – must be from own or other organic operations • Open grazing for livestock (cattle, pigs, chickens) E.g. continuous tethering of cows is not permitted. • Minimize animal stress when raised, transported, and slaughtered

  6. Is “organic” better for you? Is it worth the extra price? • http://www.ctvbc.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20100219/bc_ctv_investigates_organic_testing_100219?hub=BritishColumbiaHome No pesticides No fossil-fuel based fertilizers. Does it taste better? Less environmental impact? Supports local agriculture.

  7. Eating Local Food • Why? • Less transportation – GHG emissions(average grocery store item travels 1500 km!) • Supports local economy (e.g. farmers markets – bigger % goes to the farmer) • Probably “fresher” – from the field to the table. • Less potential for contamination (e.g. E.coli bacteria) • More likely to be “organic”

  8. “Localvores” – people who try to only eat locally grown food

  9. Last fall at Mayfield! (Nov 24th) • Cooking Up Action 2011 video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4yIdODWrBY • Ask your cafeteria about the local food options.

  10. How would your food choices change if you pursued this lifestyle?

  11. From an environmental perspective, which option has more of an impact, eating locally or eating organic?
