• On my website under “Math Activities”

• Arcademic- “Swimming Otters” under Algebra- to practice solving algebraic equations

• ONLY USE YOUR FIRST NAME as the player name

• Which weighs more a pound of iron or a pound of feathers? THEY ARE THE SAME

• How is the moon like a dollar? THEY BOTH HAVE 4 QUARTERS

3. What is alive and has only 1 foot? A LEG

### 1/3/2014 6-1 E Solve & Write Subtraction Equations

to get the variable by itself on one side of the equation

2

=

Solvex – 3 = 2

Think of this equation as a balance scale.

Whatever you do to one side has to be done to the other to keep it balanced!

Ex. 1 Solve x – 3 = 2

x – 3 = 2 Write the equation!

+ 3 = + 3 Add 3 from x + 0 = 5 each side to “undo”

the subtraction of x = 53 on the left side.

x – 3 = 2

5 - 3 = 2

2 = 2

Ex. 2

The difference between the number of people that visit Great Adventure on a Saturday and the number of people that visit the park on a Wednesday is 1,465. Saturday is the busiest day of the week. There are 4,320 visitors on Wednesday. How many visitors are there on Saturday? Write and solve an equation.

x – 4,320 = 1,465 Write the equation.

+ 4,320 = + 4,320 Subtract 120 from each side.

x = 5,785 Simplify.

There were 5,785 visitors to Great Adventure on Saturday.

Check 5,785 – 4,320 = 1,465

Ex. 3 5.14 = j – 3.2

5.14 = j – 3.2 Write the equation!

+ 3.2 = + 3.2 Add 3.2 from 8.34 = j each side to “undo”

the subtraction of j = 8.343.2 on the right side.

5.14 = j – 3.2

5.14 = 8.34 – 3.2

5.14 = 5.15

Ex. 6: Solve 10 = y - 4

10 = y – 4 Write the equation!

+ 4 = + 4 Add 4 from each side to “undo” the subtraction of 4 on the right side.

14 = y

10 = 14 - 4

10 = 14 – 4

10 = 10

• x - 5 = 9

• b – 4.4 = 1.6

• 4 = y - 8

• 3 = n – 2

• Pg. 330 #1-24 Evens

• Test Corrections due January 10th

• Study Quiz Tuesday!
