Soldiers, returning from war, needed jobs and support b. Nations had war debts to pay and cities to rebuild c. In the decade following, the economies of many nations began a shaky recovery d. U.S. experienced an economic boom after the war *Became the world’s leading economic power -made investments in Europe to promote recovery 2. Causes of the Depression a. Weaknesses in the economies of the U.S. and other western nations led to the Great Depression *Long term causes: -economic instability in Europe -destruction of WWI -inability to stabilize societies after WWI -war debts *Short term causes: -1929 U.S. stock market crash

The collapse of the American economy has a ripple effect around the world *American investors pulled their money out of Europe *High tariffs were placed on imported goods *Nations that depended on American loans, investments, and business saw their economiescollapse as well -unemployment and inflation soared b. As the Great Depression continued, many people lost faith in democracy and capitalism *Extreme ideological and belief systems of many types arose -Strong leaders supported intense nationalismand militarism, and a return to absolute rule
