  2. Context MGP works in off-grid villages in Uttar Pradesh (UP), India. Beneficiaries are poor, rural off-grid farmers. They grow basic agricultural commodities and flowers.

  3. Lack of Access to Electricity Access to the national grid is very limited in Uttar Pradesh. Residents of off-grid villages resort to burning kerosene in basic wick lanterns to produce light at night.

  4. Lack of Access to Electricity The average off-grid rural household in India spends Rs. 150 ($3) per month for 7 liters of kerosene for lighting. Poorest households spend Rs. 36 ($.80) per month for 3 liters of kerosene (the first 3 liters are subsidized).

Off-Grid Market Potential 60 to 80 million households without grid connectivity nationally 42% of rural villages in UP lack electricity; UP has a population of 250 million Neighboring states of Bihar and Jharkhand have large populations with low rural electrification rates Off Grid Distributed Energy estimated to be a $2 billion / per year market in India alone.

  6. MGP Solution Innovation: MGP builds and operates micro grids dedicated to providing lighting and mobile phone charging. By providing specific services instead of general power, MGP has what it believes to be the lowest cost micro grid in operation. Technology:

  7. Renewable Power Generation: 100 households would require 400 watts-peak of solar panels. Panels are installed on the rooftop of a village house. Battery Bank: 100 households would require 200 Amp-hours of storage capacity. Batteries are stored in a cabinet inside the same house. Power Distribution: Distribution lines run along the rooftops from the battery bank to households within the village. Power is distributed for 7 hours each night at 24 volts direct current. LED: By utilizing LED lights, power consumption per household is reduced by more than 90%. Each household is installed with two or four LED modules.

  8. MGP vs. Kerosene

  9. Commercial Value Per customer CAPEX is under Rs. 2,000 ($45). A facility for a village of 100 customers costs approximately $4,000 to construct. OPEX is estimated to be 30% of revenue. Profit is projected to be Rs. 50 per household per month or Rs. 600 ($13) per year once MGP reaches scale. Repayment rate is projected to be under 4 years and ten year return on capital is projected to be 30+%.

  10. Social Value Average village-level facility will: • Provide 100 households with improved lighting; • Reduce kerosene consumption by 3,000 liters / year; • Reduce carbon emissions by 7.5 tons per year; and • Increase school enrollment, test performance, and income generating opportunities.

  11. Current Status of MGP Facilities: MGP has build 6 facilities in UP and Bihar. MGP’s commercial pilot facility is located in Fatehpur district, UP. Status: technical model finalized, partners have been identified to help develop social engagement process Manpower: two directors, NGO partner active in 100 villages in Uttar Pradesh, construction manager hired on daily rate.

  12. Short Term Plan MGP is seeking $400k of grant and / or angel funds to create a network of 50 villages by 2012 across Fatehpur and Kanpur Rural districts (neighboring districts to Kanpur Urban). Through the process of constructing and operating the first 10, MGP will finalize its non-technical processes such as village engagement, tariff collection, and protection against power theft. With these 50 facilities operating, MGP will be able to demonstrate commercial viability and attract private sector financing to achieve its larger goals.

  13. Operation Strategy MGP’s goal is to operate 1,000 village level facilities by 2020. Village-level facilities will be organized into large clusters of 250 village level facilities managed by 4 hubs (Fatehpur and Sitapur being the first two) Monitoring teams of two will be responsible for overseeing the normal operations of 50 villages. Each village will have an MGP representative to collect tariffs, clean solar panels, and identify operational problems.

Challenges • Technical viability: proven through pilot • Reduced CAPEX: achieved through second village • Abuse of system: curbed through mobile phone charging stations, circuit breakers, and securing of equipment in locked cabinets • Regular payment collection: currently being addressed; may introduce sms-controlled switches to turn facilities on and off remotely • Expansion: yet to be addressed

Ten years professional experience, seven years working in the international development sector. Brian Shaad: negotiated partnership with UC Davis D-Lab to provide technical support. Ten years professional experience working in the international development sector.

  16. Partners • The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI): Provides technical input, access to pre-selected NGOs, and hosting of a micro grid operators network. • Sarathi Development Foundation: An NGO based in Uttar Pradesh with an active presence in over 100 villages. • UC Davis D-Lab: Allocates human and financial resources to technical challenges which have the potential to reach millions of beneficiaries.
