In older times people in India used to sleep and enjoy their meals on the floor. So buying furniture items was never on the list. But later the craftsmen started preserving the history of the country with intricately carved pieces of furniture. Knowing the history of Indian furniture style is quite interesting.

Influence from Europe • When the country was invaded by the Europeans, Portuguese, French, and English men, they needed furniture for their homes. • They looked for Indian carpenters to produce furniture but with Indian material.
Indo-Portuguese • The Mughal-style furniture in North was influenced by the Portuguese. It was made from dark hardwoods with bone or ivory inlays. • The Goanese style in the South included ornate furniture that was usually in geometric forms.
Indo-Dutch • The furniture was usually done from lighter-colored hardwoods. • The furniture was also imported from Java that had Dutch influence where furniture was characterized by the darker woods.
Anglo-Indian • Anglo-Indian furniture was popular among the Indian rulers. • The styles of the 18th century resembled Chippendale and Sheraton. These items still influence the Indian decorative.
With the departure of the British, the furniture industry in the country evolved. It is still influenced a lot by the European style.
