  1. Welcome to Mrs. Hay and Ms. Burgess’ Fourth Grade Meet the Teacher Night

  2. Math • 4th grade focuses a great deal of time on multiplication and division. • Please practice the multiplication table through the twelve's with your child at home. Students will be given timed tests on these throughout the year.

  3. Science and Texas History • In the fourth grade, your child will be studying Texas History. • In Science, we will focus on several topics: matter, energy, force, motion, types of soil, and erosion.

  4. Language Arts • Language arts consists of reading, writing, spelling, and handwriting. • Please encourage your child to read nightly. • Spelling focuses on phonics and skill building concepts. There will not be weekly lists; however, there is a core list that students will be expected to know by the end of the year.

  5. Writing • Please practice handwriting at home with your child. Cursive handwriting is introduced in class but practiced at home through homework assignments. • Students will be learning how to write two types of compositions this year: Narrative & Expository • Students will also learn how to revise and edit a composition.

  6. Homework • In all subjects, homework will be assigned on Monday and due on Friday. • Please read, practice handwriting, and multiplication facts nightly.

  7. Grading Procedures • Spelling grades count as 10% of the Language Arts grade. • All other grades carry equal weight. • Handwriting, Health, and Art grades will be given as an S or an N. • All make-up work must be completed at school. • Failing tests may be redone once per test to receive full credit up to a 70. • Students may redo failing grades for daily work after the concept has been re-taught. They must complete the work at school and may receive full credit up to a 70.

  8. Take-home Folders • The Thursday Take-home Folders (red folders) will be sent home every Thursday with your child’s conduct and work habits grades and with any graded papers or notes requiring your signature. Please sign and return all graded papers on Friday.

  10. Conference Appointments • We are always available for parent conference upon request. Please call or e-mail to set-up a conference when you feel it is necessary. We are partners to help your child be a success this year.
