  3. Historical overview

  4. Two ways road

  5. Repats (Retuning Russians) Statistics: more than one thousand in 2008 alone (A. Chepurin, Chief of Immigration Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Why?

  6. Why they are coming back? • Financial attraction of Russian labor market. Salary growth (2007, hh.ru): • IT - 69% • Sales – 50% • Production/Technology – 48% • Banking – 46% • Investment – 43% • Consultancy – 41%

  7. Why they are coming back? • Glass ceiling – reached the level in career when next move required extraordinary efforts. • Current world market situation – Russia and current crisis. • Nostalgia – those memories which are more associated with positive emotions. • Family – most of the repats have old parents which require additional attention.

  8. Expats vs Repats. Expats: • Expensive ( notorious “expat package”) • Cultural adaptation (particularity of Russian work culture) • Language limitations (Russian, Cyrillic-based language is difficult to learn) • Concerns: personal security

  9. Expats vs Repats. Repats: • Financial: Less expensive (in most of the cases: no relocation costs, “repat package” - unknown). • Cultural: In-built understanding of cultural issues both social and work related. • Language: Native speakers. • Entrepreneurial spirit – came through difficult period of adaptation already and not afraid to do it again.

  10. Temporary or permanent? • Russian Immigration legislation – many Russians lost their citizenship. • Predicted stability – changes in financial or political situation in Russia can push them back.

  11. Successful examples • Ireland – government program. • China – “bananas” people. • India – new “caste”.
