  1. Leadership

  2. Learning objectives • What is leadership? • Debunking the myths • Leadership styles • Using different techniques and styles to lead more effectively

  3. What is leadership? “Leadership is about making others better as a result of your presence and making sure that impact lasts in your absence."Sheryl Sandberg “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower."Steve Jobs "Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others."Jack Welch "The key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority."Kenneth Blanchard "Leadership is lifting a person’s vision to high sights, the raising of a person’s performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations."Peter Drucker "Become the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily; even if you had no title or position."Brian Tracy “Leaders should be visible, accessible and approachable, and never stop learning."Richard Branson “Leadership is the ability to hide your panic from others."Lao Tzu

  4. You make the call: Why is leadership important? It inspires trust and greater confidence It increases motivation and personal satisfaction Done well, leadership can ensure a clearer vision    True False True False True False

  5. Debunking the myths Leadership is only important for C-level executives Leaders are born, not made Leadership is all about having power over others Women don’t make good leaders Good leaders are inspirational and rousing speakers

  6. Preparing for leadership • What does leadership mean to you? • Produce your own definition or find one that reflects your personal philosophy • Common myths about leadership • How might you respond? • What essential qualities do good leaders have?

  7. Leadership qualities • Decisiveness • Empathy • Accountability • Confidence • Optimism • Honesty • Vision • Adaptability

  8. Opinion: Authenticity and leadership I’ve heard a lot about the importance of authenticity. But what does it mean? Isn’t it insulting to tell people to be themselves. I disagree. Your values and principles play a big part in how you respond to events and situations personally and professionally. It’s about showing your team you’re human and having empathy. It just gives people an opportunity to exploit you and take advantage. Any sign of weakness will be seized upon.

  9. Leadership styles • Authoritarian leader (autocratic) • Participative leader (democratic) • Delegative leader (laissez-faire)

  10. Scenario: Jamal’s project We’re working with specialists who are highly-qualified and know exactly what they’re doing Which leadership style is best? Authoritarian leader (autocratic) Participative leader (democratic) Delegative leader (laissez-faire) 

  11. Scenario: Vera’s project The deadline is tight. There’s no time for discussion or negotiation. Which leadership style is best?  Authoritarian leader (autocratic) Participative leader (democratic) Delegative leader (laissez-faire)

  12. Scenario: Ryan’s view I see myself as a hands-on leader, so I participate in group discussions and get input from my team. Good relationships are vital, but I like to make the final decision. Which leadership style is best? Authoritarian leader (autocratic) Participative leader (democratic) Delegative leader (laissez-faire) 

  13. Other leadership styles • Bureaucratic • Charismatic • Coercive • Coaching • Narcissistic • Paternalistic • Situational • Transactional • Transformational

  14. Blake and Mouton’s Managerial Grid: • A concern for productivity (X axis) Versus • A concern for productivity (Y axis)

  15. You make the call: What style is it? I try to strike the best deal between my team and the firm Performance is all that matters – employees just need to follow the rules I put the needs and security of my team above everything else  Country Club Management Team Management Middle of the Road Management Authority – Compliance Management Impoverished Management Country Club Management Team Management Middle of the Road Management Authority – Compliance Management Impoverished Management Country Club Management Team Management Middle of the Road Management Authority – Compliance Management Impoverished Management  

  17. DO • Think about what leadership means to you - how does this impact on others? • Assess what leadership qualities and attributes you already have and what else you may need to be a great leader • Use different techniques (such as the Managerial Grid model) to explore your own style of leadership • Be adaptable - different situations can demand new thinking and another approach

  18. DON’T • Assume that all you need is the job title to be a great leader • Be too rigid - there are many kinds of leaders with different qualities so play to your strengths • Set unrealistic expectations – “You don’t learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing and falling over” (Richard Branson) • Try to micro-manage everything and everyone - good leaders empower and give the team autonomy and ownership
