  2. Island of Blue Dolphins • Describe some of the things Karana had done to survive her situation. Name at least four actions and how each helped her survive. • I have listed many character traits on the whiteboard. Choose three that fit Karana's character best. Think about her personality and how she was able to cope with challenges she faced. How does each trait fit her? (Use examples from the story to strengthen your response) • The story is written in the 1st person perspective (meaning Karana is telling us her story instead of a narrator). Why do you think the author chose to write the story this way?

  3. Satchel Paige • Compare a players life in the Negro Leagues to a player’s life in the Major Leagues. How do you feel about this reality? • Write three sentences that summarize the main events of Satchel Paige. (Do not include unnecessary details…think about sequence of events-be descriptive…use specific examples/vocabulary from the story) • The Girls of Summer and Satchel Paige show how two groups of people had difficulties playing professional baseball for different reasons.
