  1. Journal Prompts English 11AP 2013-2014

  2. Which character’s story in The Things They Carriedaffected you the most, and why? Journal #18-19-13

  3. O’Brien specializes in paradox, or seemingly-contradictory statements that express a truth. At the close of “On the Rainy River,” he paradoxically states, “I was a coward. I went to war.” • Explore the meaning of O’Brien’s paradox: Why, in his mind, was it a cowardly action to go to war? • Do you agree with O’Brien’s self-condemnation? Do you think the “right” thing to do would have been to flee to Canada? Journal #28-20-13

  4. In chapter 6 we get to know Hester’s little darling, Pearl. Reflect on what you were like when you were a child…let’s say about 5 years old. • What was your personality like? • Who did you play with? • What did you play with (toys or otherwise)? • Were you a “devil child,” an “angel child,” or somewhere in between? • Provide an anecdote to illustrate the kind of kid you were, if possible. Journal #39-4-13

  5. Hester is ostracized (alienated) from her community because she committed adultery. For what actions would a person in our society receive similar treatment and/or judgment? • (Optional) Have you ever felt like an outsider or felt unfairly judged? Explain. Journal #49-11-13

  6. Read the New York Times article “Still Puritan After All These Years.” • What in the article is interesting or surprising to you, and why? What is not surprising, and why? • How does the article connect with ideas from Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers? Journal #59-17-13

  7. Fear can be a powerful motivator. Has fear or anxiety ever motivated you to do anything? What are some other examples, from history or the world today, of fear being used as a motivator? In your opinion, is it ever ethical to use fear as a motivator? Journal #610-1-13

  8. Choose ONE: • What qualities are most important to becoming successful? What qualities will you need to successfully accomplish your own goals for the future? • Having read Franklin’s aphorisms, explain how a wise or witty saying—or even a piece of advice—has influenced you. Journal #710-9-13

  9. You and some buddies want to take a road trip over Spring Break, but your parent(s) is/are reluctant to let you go. Brainstorm a list of arguments you might use to get them to let you go. Try to include a variety of appeals (logos, pathos, ethos). Journal #810-17-13

  10. Write about a time when nature “wowed” you, when you were impressed by its majesty. Describe your experience with as much vivid detail as possible. Journal #911-11-13

  11. Describe an instance of nonconformity:a time you, someone you know, or someone famous acted against the norms of society. What happened? How did people react? What were the results? (Benefit or harm others? Benefit or harm society as a whole? Personal consequences? Etc.) Journal #1011-19-13

  12. Do you agree with the Transcendentalists’ optimistic views of human perfectibility? Or are you more like the Dark Romantics, believing that human nature has a dark, irrational side that can’t be ignored? Write down your opinions about the ideas of the Transcendentalists and the Dark Romantics. How do you see yourself in relation to them? Journal #1111-25-13
