  2. Geografia de El Salvador • El Salvador is located in Central America. • Several small rivers flow through El Salvador into the Pacific Ocean: • Goascorán and the Río Grande de San Miguel. These are the rivers that travel to the Pacific Ocean. • Only the largest river, the Lempa River, flowing from Honduras across El Salvador to the ocean, is navigable for commercial traffic. • Volcanic craters enclose lakes, the most important of which are Lake Ilopango (70 km² / 27 sq mi) and Lake Coatepeque (26 km² / 10 sq mi). • The capital of El Salvador is San Salvador

  4. Historia de El Salvador • The first "shout of independence" in El Salvador came in 1821, at the hands of criollo elite. • In 1821, El Salvador and the other Central American provinces declared their independence from Spain. • In 1979 the reformist Revolutionary Government Junta took power. • The United States supported the government and Cuba and other Communist states the insurgents now organized as the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN). A peace agreement marked the end of the war and FMLN become one of the major political parties.

  6. Economia de El Salvador • El Salvador's external debt decreased sharply in 1993, chiefly as a result of an agreement under which the United States forgave about $461 million of official debt. • El Salvador historically has been the most industrialized nation in Central America, though a decade of war eroded this position. In 1999, manufacturing accounted for 22% of GDP. • Exports in 1999 grew 1.9% while imports grew 3%, narrowing El Salvador's trade deficit. • Before 1980, a small economic elite owned most of the land in El Salvador and controlled a highly successful agricultural industry. About 70% of farmers were sharecroppers or laborers on large plantations. Many farm workers were under- or unemployed and impoverished.

  8. Culturta de El Salvador • The Roman Catholic Church plays an important role in the Salvadoran culture. • Important foreign personalities in El Salvador were the Jesuit priests and professors Ignacio Ellacuria, Ignacio Martín-Baró, and Segundo Montes, who were murdered in 1989 by the Salvadoran Army during the heat of the civil war. • Painting, ceramics and textile goods are the main manual artistic expressions. • Writers Francisco Gavidia (1863–1955), Salarrué (Salvador Salazar Arrué) (1899-1975), Claudia Lars, Alfredo Espino, Pedro Geoffroy Rivas, Manlio Argueta, José Roberto Cea, and poet Roque Dalton are among the most important writers to stem El Salvador.

  10. La Gente de El Salvador • El Salvador elects its head of state – the President of El Salvador – directly through a fixed-date general election whose winner is decided by absolute majority. • The presidential period is five years, and re-election is not permitted. • The most recent presidential election, held on 21 March 2004, resulted in the election of Tony Saca of the ARENA party with almost 58 percent of the vote, the highest in Salvadoran history. • Salvadoreans also elect a single-chamber, unicameral national legislature – the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador – of 84 members (deputies) elected by closed-list proportional representation for three-year terms, with the possibility of immediate re-election. • Twenty of the 84 seats in the Legislative Assembly are elected on the basis of a single national constituency. • The remaining 64 are elected in 14 multi-member constituencies (corresponding to the country's 14 departments) that range from 3-16 seats each according to department population size.
