  1. It’s All About UTS09 Or UTS10, or whatever…….

  2. TaxWise is Very Portable • Install TaxWise from the original CD; register EFIN, enter Site Information; save the rest for later. • Once you have a UTS09 folder, you can copy it to another disk, another computer, a flash drive, etc. • Once copied, you have to pay attention to a few folders/files.

  3. Important Stuff Found in UTS09 • How to install TaxWise from “TWTECH”. • Where to find the EFIN(s). • And the Starting DCN. • What’s in the “USERS” folder. • The Admin User. • The Ones You Create. • Defaults and Print Packets.

  4. Installing TaxWise (any Year). • Navigate to the “UTSXX” Folder. • Navigate to the “TWTECH” Folder. • Open the folder and find “Setup”. • Double-click and follow the instructions. • NOTE – One copy ONLY can be installed on any computer at one time.

  5. Dealing With the EFIN(s). • You can register one or more EFINs in TaxWise (in Setup). • The EFINs are kept in “UTS09\Setup.000”, along with other setup information and the last configuration used. • If your workstation has a Workstation Variable associated, the file name will contain that. ie, workstation 101 will be “Setup.101”.

  6. The Declaration Control Number (DCN) • The EFIN + the DCN + the calendar year create a unique identifier for each return. • The starting DCN is associated with a physical computer, without regard to EFIN, user, etc. • Assign a unique range of DCNs to each computer; don’t share any numbers. • When you hit “e-file” the DCN is assigned, and the starting number is incremented by +1. • The DCN is entered in Setup and kept in “UTS09\DCN.09”.

  7. The USERS folder. • Three User folders are automatic; Admin, Guest and Training. Even if you want to delete them, you can’t. • More Users are added using the “Security Manager” in the Admin user. • The User folders are used to store the site defaults and the tax returns. • Each user must have unique defaults, and may have unique Print Packets.

  8. Tax Form Defaults • The form defaults are found in the Admin User as file 9I000000.000. • Our version of TaxWise has default defaults as specified by AARP, but most of us make some changes. • Defaults that are “common” (not site specific) should be created first in the Admin user. • Site specific defaults include site info at the bottom of form 1040, etc.

  9. The Print Packet Files • These files determine which forms will be printed, and in what order. • If a print packet file is absent in the User folder, the one in “Admin” is used. • Print packets have the extension .PFL There are 7 files possible. • We were able to use one set of files for most of the sites in CA-02.

  10. Print Packet Files (2) • Sign.PFL – Stuff taxpayer deals with. • Federal.PFL – Federal Return. • State.PFL – State Return. • FedMail.PFL – Copy for paper return. • StateMail.PFL – Copy for paper return. • File.PFL & Organizer.PFL – Not used in CA2.

  11. Prior Year Versions • Are always paper returns. • Usually have a generic EFIN and can have a common PTIN, site info., etc. • One version is fine for all sites. • Copy the UTSXX File(s). • Run P:\UTSXX\TWTech\Setup.
