Marie CurieAn Icon For Women Scientists1867-1934 • Manya Sklodowska- Curie, Otherwise known as Marie Curie, is held up as an icon, Representation of what it means to be successful woman in Science. • She was praised and rewarded by contemporaries for her discovery of the elements radium and polonium . • her research work on radioactivity lead to further discoveries a bout the atom and leading to the development of treatment of cancer.

Marie CurieAn Icon For Women Scientists1867-1934 • Marie Curie, was a two- time winner of the Nobel Prize for her work on radioactivity. • In 1897 she completed and published her work on the magnetic properties steel in the “Bulletin of the society for encouragement of national industry”. • Between 1881 and 1894, beginning at age twenty –four , she earned two degrees. Both equivalent to a baccalaureate degree, in physics and Mathematics.

  4. Marie CurieAn Icon For Women Scientists1867-1934 • In 1894 she won the polish Alexandrovith scholarships, which allowed polish students to pursue their education outside of Poland. • In July 1897 she married to Pierre Curie. • Pierre and Marie became collaborators in science.

Marie CurieAn Icon For Women Scientists1867-1934 • Marie Curie and Pierre Curie shared the 1903 noble prize for physics with Henri Becquerel for their discovery of radioactivity. • In 1922, Marie Curie was made a member of the academy of medicine of Paris, for the part she played in discovering radium. • She was also the sole winner of the 1911 noble prize in chemistry. • She was the first women admitted to an academy in France.

Marie CurieAn Icon For Women Scientists1867-1934 • Cure's life was a life of firsts, and her work is certainly a testament to what women scientist can achieve. • In 1892, when she entered the Sorbonne University, their were only 210 women enrolled out of a student population of nine thousand. • Certainly Marie Curie is exceptional, not only among female scientist but among scientist in general.
