  1. Biotechnology

  2. Biotechnology • a field of applied biology that involves the use of living organisms and bioprocesses in engineering, technology, medicine and other fields requiring bioproducts.

  3. Genetic Engineering • is the direct human manipulation of an organism's genome using modern DNA technology. It involves the introduction of foreign DNA or synthetic genes into the organism of interest

  4. Human Genome Project • identify all the approximately 20,000-25,000 genes in human DNA, • determine the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA, • store this information in databases, • improve tools for data analysis, • transfer related technologies to the private sector, and • address the ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) that may arise from the project.

  5. Benefits of HGP • Molecular medicine • Energy sources and environmental applications • Risk assessment • Bioarchaeology, anthropology, evolution, and human migration • DNA forensics (identification) • Agriculture, livestock breeding, and bioprocessing

  6. Ethical/Legal Concerns • Fairness in use of information • Privacy and confidentiality • Psychological impact and stigmatization • Reproductive Issues • Uncertainties (should we test everyone?) • Health/environmental concerns • Commercialization

  7. Agriculture • Desirable Characteristics: • Increase Yield • Increase protein and oil • Environmental conditions • Disease and Pest resistance

  8. Careers • Researchers in agriculture, biology, genetics, and medicine are at the forefront of new biotechnology discoveries. • work in an academic environment, such as a university, or for a company or a government agency

  9. Economic Benefits • $64 billion industry in NC • Charlotte: 370+ companies • Science, technology, math, biology • Undergraduate: Biology, post-graduate in Biotech
