Purpose of the Presentation To enhance one’s perspective of student life at Mary Washington and reflect on the opportunities and experiences students have everyday. To consider how students grow and change through their college experience. To review the resources and support systems that enhance the student out-of-class experience.
5:30 a.m. The alarm goes off for two senior swimmers / roommates in their final season of competition. The two grab a breakfast bar and hit the pool from 6-8 a.m. and return to their room and prepare for class at 9.
6:45 a.m. COAR volunteer and Relay for Life Event Chair, Janie, wakes up early to go for a run in preparation for the “Fight Back 5K” in two weeks.
8:02 a.m. Susan leaves UMW Apartments, hops on her bike and heads to Monroe Hall. On the way she stops at Brent Hall (UMW Police) to register her bike and laptop. She makes another stop at the Bookstore for coffee and a quick snack, but accidently leaves her laptop bag near the coffee counter.
9:00 a.m. Professor Smith introduces her Psychology of Women students to the concept of service-learning. While deepening their classroom learning, each student will volunteer to serve the community through a variety of agencies that support women, such as Hope House.
10:51 a.m. Between class, Steve grabs a protein bar and an extra bottle of water on his way to give blood in the Great Hall. The Blood Drive is sponsored by the Student Athletic Advisory Committee…and Steve is going to support his team and the Athletics Department.
11:43 a.m Susan has a few minutes for a quick FaceBook update but realizes that she does not have her laptop - (initial panic!!) But she relaxes and goes to Brent Hall to find her bag (and her wallet) were turned in to the Police. The serial number matched with her registered number and the Police dispatcher was just about to call her cell.
Noon Over lunch, the President of BOND (Brothers Of a New Direction) attends a “Brown Bag Lunch” on James Farmer and Civil Rights presented by the Post Doctoral Fellow in Civil Rights and Social Justice.
1:00 p.m. A freshman student knocks on her RA’s door and shares that she hasn’t been sleeping well, is depressed, and is having trouble regulating her medication since being at school. The RA walks with her to the CAPS center where she is seen by a counselor through their triage process.
2:00 p.m. Senior SGA members leave campus headed for Washington, DC where they have been asked to attend an evening reception and meeting with Vice President Joe Biden.
2:30 p.m. Stephanie receives a text from a former boyfriend that makes her feel unsafe. She calls her RA who immediately connects her to UMW Police and the Dean’s Office. Shortly, the student is in a meeting with the Dean of Students, UMW Police Lieutenant, and a CAPS staff member, where they address her concerns and establish a response plan.
3:00 p.m. The Women's Ultimate Frisbee team wins the regional team competition in Atlanta and qualifies for the United States Ultimate Association (USUA) Women's Collegiate National Championships.
4:00 p.m. Maggie volunteers during the early part of the afternoon at the IMANI Multicultural Center in Fredericksburg.
At the same time…. Katherine travels with 7 other mentors to Spotsylvania Middle School for the Young Women Leaders Program. They spend one-on-one time with the middle school girls creating relationships and serving as critical role models for students who need direction, motivation, and inspiration.
5:30 p.m. Women’s basketball student-athlete Bethany receives an email from her coach with video breakdowns of their upcoming NCAA opponent. Bethany downloads the video to her I-phone and watches it after finishing her English paper.
6:00 p.m. Graduating senior, Lee, leaves dinner with his roommate and heads to Woodard and the UMW Post Office where he opens an acceptance letter from the University of Delaware Law School.
7:14 p.m. Basketball student-athlete, Marcus, is an aspiring music producer. After practice and studying most of the afternoon, he is now busy designing and producing a video anthem for UMW Athletics. The video is to be used during New Student Orientation.
7:30 p.m. Andrew goes to work out with the group fitness Zumba program. Zumba was added to the Campus Rec schedule based upon a student interest assessment. On alternating days Andrew works out in the weight room with a program designed by the Recreation Associate Director.
9:00 p.m. Young Republican and Young Democrat student organization leaders lead an open forum regarding an upcoming political election. Faculty attend and provide commentary followed by lively debate and exchange from members of respective political student groups.
10:12 p.m. Marty is planning ahead for the upcoming fall break and needs housing while school is not in session…. Although he can’t gain access to the Residence Life offices, he can still submit a request to stay during a University break period any time of the day or night over the internet.
12:03 a.m After attending the concert “FUN” hosted by Student Activities and Engagement, suitemates in Virginia pile into their 2004 Honda Civic and head to IHOP for a late night snack. They take their books with hope of studying. After 2 plates of pancakes - and a couple hours on Chemistry – they return home at 2:20 and are in bed by 2:45… Their alarm clock is set for 8:00 a.m.
