  6. Carmelites The Carmelites are a very old and special order. Carmelites pray a great deal, keep silence, and practice many penances. They took their name from Mt. Carmel, where Elijah performed a great miracle against the prophets of Ba’al. Then Elijah traveled to Mt. Horeb where he heard God, not in a mighty wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a “still small voice.” In the same way, Carmelites discover God in the silence of contemplative prayer. They seek God on behalf of the whole Church and pray for all of us.
