  4. EDUCATION AND TRAINING • Some 2-year tech schools offer carpentry degrees that are affiliated with unions and contractor organizations. Credits earned as part of an apprenticeship program usually count toward an associate's degree. You also need to at least have a high school education or equivalent. You need to be 18 and physically able to do the work. You also need proof of U.S. citizenship and you need to pass a drug screening.

JOB OUTLOOK/FUTURE PROSPECTS • Employment of carpenters is projected to grow 20 percent from 2010 to 2020 • The need to repair and replace roads and bridges also will spur some employment growth for carpenters. • Construction of factories and power plants also may result in some new jobs. • Overall job prospects for carpenters should improve over the coming decade as construction activity rebounds from the recent recession. • Experienced carpenters should have the best job opportunities.
