  2. Surviving Social Studies… • Textbook: stays at home all year. We have an extra set to use here in the classroom. • 3 Subject notebook: all homework and notes should be completed in the notebook. • Organized binder • Textbook Website: games, audio, quizzes • Always come to class with assignment notebook!

  3. Homework • Students can expect to have Social Studies homework nightly. • Homework may include: Reading from the textbook, taking notes, answering practice questions, making flashcards, working on a project, etc. • Completed homework is necessary for your child to get the most out of the Social Studies lesson/ activity for the day. • If homework is incomplete I will circle the assignment in the agenda. • Missing homework multiple times will result in a recess detention.

  4. Projects • 3 major country projects this year: Current Events, Culture, and Flora/ Fauna • Students are assigned the same country all year • Rubrics are given and students receive an overall project grade, as well as a presentation grade • Projects are typically done on powerpoint, poster board, or Prezi. • Students sign up for presentation dates and will know far in advance. • We will also do multiple projects in class, some which may require at home work.

  5. Units of Study • 5 Themes of Geography, reviewing maps, latitude/ longitude, etc. • Europe- broken down into smaller regions • Russia • Africa • Religions • Asia- broken down into smaller regions • For each region we study, we focus on: Physical and political maps, government, economy, lifestyle, and culture.

  6. Tests and Quizzes • Vocabulary Quizzes • Political and Physical Map Quizzes • Tests at the end of each unit • Pop quizzes • Study guides will be given for all major tests. I also post these on my website. All vocabulary will be posted on quizlet, which you can access from my website.

  7. Some fun things we do… • Earth View • Prezi project where we plan a trip around the world • A project on the iPads using Educreation when we study Africa • Creating maps of regions of Europe • Global Scrapbook • Stratelogica • Read a novel based on refugees from Sudan • Travel brochures • Skits • Geography games
